Cubase Startup Crash – Diagnosing the asio.sys Error

I worked with a film composer who was facing a particularly frustrating interruption to his workflow. He contacted Audio Support because he was unable to open his main production software, Cubase.

The symptoms were specific and alarming: he would attempt to launch Cubase, the loading splash screen would appear, run through a few initialisation steps, and then simply vanish. There were no error messages within the application, and no crash logs were immediately obvious. The software just disappeared, leaving him staring at his desktop wallpaper.

However, he noted a second anomaly. Every time he booted up his Windows PC, he received a system error message stating that asio.sys could not be located. While he initially thought these might be separate issues, my experience suggested they were almost certainly linked.

program compitibility assistant asio.sys error displayed at windows startup

To confirm my suspicion, I asked the client to launch Cubase again while I watched the splash screen closely.

Cubase, helpfully (unlike some other DAWs), lists the components it is loading in real-time on the splash screen. I watched as it loaded the video engine and the VST 2.x plug-in manager. However, the moment the text changed to “Initialising Audio Engine,” the program crashed to the desktop.

This confirmed the diagnosis: the audio engine was failing to start because the underlying driver architecture was broken or missing a component.I performed some quick research and found that asio.sys errors are frequently associated with ASUS motherboard updates conflicting with audio drivers. I also noticed the client was using a Tascam 4×4 HR audio interface. In a previous session, we had discovered that the dedicated Tascam drivers were unstable on his specific build of Windows, so we had been relying on ASIO4ALL—a universal audio driver that acts as a bridge between hardware and software.

My primary goal was to restore the asio.sys file or provide a valid alternative driver that Cubase could latch onto during startup.

First, I reinstalled the ASIO4ALL driver (version 2.14). Although this software is quite old now, it remains a remarkably robust tool for solving driver conflicts on Windows systems.

Immediately after the reinstall, we launched Cubase. It successfully passed the “Initialising Audio Engine” stage, and the client’s project loaded perfectly. He was able to play back his compositions, and the panic subsided.

However, I wanted to ensure this was a permanent fix. I asked the client to restart the computer.

Unfortunately, upon reboot, the Windows error message—asio.sys not found—returned. When we tried to open Cubase, it crashed again. The system was seemingly wiping the file or losing the path permission upon restart.

We then attempted to install the official Realtek audio drivers recommended by the ASUS update utility, hoping this would restore the missing system component. This did not solve the issue, and I eventually disabled the Realtek device to prevent it from interfering with the Tascam interface.

With our one-hour session time approaching its limit, we had to make a pragmatic decision. We hadn’t found the root cause of why Windows was deleting or misplacing the asio.sys file on reboot, but we did have a working solution.

I demonstrated that running the ASIO4ALL installer—which takes about 30 seconds—immediately fixed the problem for that session. The client was satisfied with this workaround. He agreed that adding one minute to his morning startup routine was an acceptable trade-off to get back to composing immediately, rather than spending more hours on deep system diagnostics.

    We established a workflow:

    1. Turn on PC.
    2. Run the ASIO4ALL installer.
    3. Open Cubase and work.

I have marked this case as “unsolved” in my internal logs, even though the client is back to work. As a technician, I prefer a clean fix where the system works perfectly without user intervention.

Reflecting on the session, I suspect the issue may relate to administrative privileges. If we had run the installer specifically as an Administrator, or adjusted the permissions of the folder where asio.sys resides, it might have stuck after a reboot. I also considered disabling Windows system integrity checks, but decided against it; compromising the security of a client’s machine to fix an audio driver is rarely the right choice.

This case serves as a reminder that sometimes, in professional production environments, a reliable workaround is more valuable than a perfect but time-consuming repair. The client didn’t need a perfect computer; he needed to write music today.

Audio driver conflicts on Windows can be notoriously difficult to pin down, especially when manufacturer update utilities interfere with DAW operations. I help musicians and producers worldwide solve problems like this every day. If you’re struggling with Cubase crashes or driver errors, I’ll help you find the real cause—or a reliable workaround—so you can get back to creating.

No automated tickets, no waiting queues — just one-to-one help from an experienced music technology specialist. I’ll connect to your system remotely, identify the issue, and guide you through the fix.

  • Fixing Cubase Plug-in Loading Errors After Migration to an M2 Mac running OSX Tahoe 26

Fixing Cubase Plug-in Loading Errors After Migration to an M2 Mac running OSX Tahoe 26

Neil, a professional composer, contacted Audio Support because Cubase 12 would not load any of his existing projects on his new MacBook M2 running macOS Tahoe.
He had recently migrated his setup from a 2019 Intel-based Mac using Migration Assistant, hoping for a smooth transition.
Instead, Cubase froze at launch or crashed mid-load whenever he opened an existing session.

Immediately, several red flags stood out:

    • Cubase 12 was an Intel-era version, running under Rosetta on Apple Silicon, rather than natively.
    • macOS Tahoe (2025) was far newer than both Cubase 12 and several of his plug-ins.
    • His plug-in library was a mix of legacy and updated versions, copied over via Migration Assistant — a method that often breaks authorisations and file paths.

Together, these factors explained the inconsistent behaviour and project loading failures.

When opening a project, Cubase displayed the names of tracks being initialised on its splash screen before freezing. Watching closely, I noticed it consistently stopped while attempting to load the Arturia JUN-6 V plug-in.
That pointed to an incompatible or corrupted plug-in file.

I guided Neil through starting Cubase in Safe Mode — achieved by holding Shift + Option + Command while launching — which opens the DAW with all third-party plug-ins temporarily disabled.
Once in Safe Mode, we could open his project successfully, delete the problematic JUN-6 instance, and save the session under a new name.

After relaunching Cubase normally, the project opened and played back audio.
Several plug-ins still worked, but many older ones failed to load — confirming that multiple plug-ins installed from the Intel Mac were incompatible on Apple Silicon.

In the short term, disabling specific plug-ins allowed Neil to recover his projects and continue working.
    For a reliable long-term fix, I recommended:

    1. Updating to Cubase 14, which runs natively on Apple Silicon.
    2. Re-installing all plug-ins from their latest installers rather than copying them via Migration Assistant.
    3. Maintaining consistent plug-in versions aligned with Cubase 14 and macOS Tahoe.

This rebuild would ensure full compatibility and let his M2 Mac use its processing power efficiently.

During the session, Neil also mentioned trouble activating HALion Sonic.
Checking his My Steinberg account showed that his Absolute 5 HALion library licence was still tied to a Soft eLicenser on his old Mac.
Because Steinberg has retired its eLicenser servers, the licence could not be re-downloaded automatically.

I helped Neil draft a support request to Steinberg, providing the correct system IDs and explaining the transfer situation clearly — ensuring a fast manual resolution.

This case underlines how Migration Assistant can create invisible compatibility problems for audio software.
When moving from an Intel-based Mac to Apple Silicon, direct copying often brings across outdated binaries, hidden preference files, and invalid plug-in authorisations.

The correct approach is a clean install: reinstall Cubase and plug-ins from fresh, current installers optimised for Apple Silicon.
While that takes time, it prevents ongoing crashes and missing plug-ins — and maximises system performance.

Neil’s situation also highlights the importance of version alignment.
He was running 2025 macOS on 2022 hardware with a 2019-era Cubase build — a mix almost guaranteed to trigger instability.
Once he understood why, and saw his projects loading again, he was relieved to have a clear roadmap forward.
He later left Audio Support a positive review on Google for the clarity and care of the session.

As music production technology evolves, transitions between macOS generations and CPU architectures can easily disrupt creative workflows.
At Audio Support, I help clients navigate those changes — identifying the causes of Cubase crashes, plug-in errors, and project loading issues, and providing both short-term workarounds and long-term stability plans.

  • Troubleshooting Cubase 14 – Part 2

    Troubleshooting Cubase 14 – Part 2

Hi Paul. I am starting to get many Cubase crashes for no obvious reason. I upgraded to Cubase 14 as I thought that would help with stability, but it hasn’t solved the problem. I need to book a session with you as soon as possible. CT

I received the above message from an existing client and we arranged a time to connect for a remote support session. Before the session, I sent my client a link to a past post detailing my previous experiences dealing with Cubase 14:

I explained that other Cubase clients of mine were experiencing similar problems and I hadn’t been able to provide any quick solutions so far. It seems that certain combinations of third party plug-ins and Cubase’s revised audio engine are causing issues. My method of solving these issues would be to update any older plug-ins, but do it systematically so we know if any of the updated plug-ins are causing new problems.

Once I was remotely viewing my client’s desktop, I asked him to open Cubase and show me how it was running. We had a look at one of his larger projects and could see CPU spikes occurring.

    VST Compatibility

I showed my client how we could open the VST Plug-in Manager and see what plug-ins were being used in the project and how many instances of each.

I could see my client was using many VST 2 plug-ins in his project. I recommended that he update as many as he could to VST 3 versions. This should improve how the plug-ins interact with Cubase’s updated audio engine and ASIO guard feature.

I could see my client was using numerous instances of Kontakt 5 in this project. I recommended that he update to Kontakt version 8 and then manually swap out all his instances of Kontakt in the project from version 5 to version 8. Kontakt has had many changes between versions 5 and 8 which improve its stability and performance with modern DAWs including Cubase 14.

    ASIO Guard

I showed my client how to use the VST Plug-in Manager to disable and enable individual plug-ins from being part of Cubase’s ASIO Guard.

We could then use Cubase’s Performance Monitor to see what affect certain plug-ins were having on the ASIO Guard and which ones were causing dropouts on which tracks.

    Results

My client was happy that he now understood the likely reason for the crashes, and we made a plan for what he could do to troubleshoot the problem further:

    • Install Kontakt 8
    • Install VST 3 version of Best Service Engine
    • Install VST 3 version of IK Multimedia Miroslav Philharmonik
    • Change all instances of Kontakt 5 to Kontakt 8
    • Use Performance Monitor to determine if any other plug-ins are causing errors.

My client told he would put all this in to place and update me in a week.

  • Why Your PC Shuts Down When Using Cubase: Troubleshooting Video Driver Conflict

Why Your PC Shuts Down When Using Cubase: Troubleshooting Video Driver Conflict

Hi Paul. My PC keeps shutting down when I’m using Cubase 13. I don’t know why. Can you help?

I received the above message from an existing client and we arranged a time to connect for a remote support session.

Once I was remotely viewing my client’s desktop, I started by looking at the Windows Event Viewer System logs to see what Windows had reported as the cause of the shutdowns.

Inside Event Viewer could see that processes referencing EloTouch were active moments before the shutdown. I researched Elo Touch online and found it was the brand of one of my client’s monitor screens.

Further research found a reference on the Elo Touch website to a known shutdown and Blue Screen of Death problem with this monitor:

I guided my client through the procedure to update his video drivers as instructed by the Elo Touch site.

In this instance, the shutdowns seemed unrelated to Cubase. I asked my client to keep using his Cubase system as normal and to let me know if any further crashes occurred.

    Additional Support

I advised my client that due to the age of the video card on his system, this may be an unsolvable compatibility problem. I checked that the auto-save function in Cubase was working correctly in case his PC suddenly crashed again. If the shutdown issue did return, I advised my client to disconnect the Elo monitor to confirm it was the source of the problem.

  • Troubleshooting Cubase 14 – Part 1

    Troubleshooting Cubase 14 – Part 1

Last week, I received an email from a client in LA asking for help with Cubase. He had installed Cubase 14 on a brand-new PC with maxed out RAM and an i9 processor.

My client explained that Cubase 14 wouldn’t open at all on his system, and this was a known problem by the Cubase development team. They advised him to use Cubase 13 while they worked on an update to fix the problem.

My opinion on the release of Cubase 14:

When I heard that Cubase 14 was being released at the start of November 2024 I was surprised. Cubase 13 had been out a year, but was still full of bugs.

My personal experiences of Cubase 13 was that it was temperamental and prone to crashes. Especially if the user had a lot of third-party plug-ins installed on their system (which most of my professional composer clients do). It also seemed to have problems with CPU management. My advice to my Audio Support clients over 2024 has been to stick with Cubase 12 and wait for an update to 13 that fixes these bugs.

I was disappointed to hear that Steinberg had not resolved these issues but were instead selling another badly developed and under-tested paid upgrade to their customers.

As someone who has been working with Cubase as both a user and support technician for 20 years, I see this as another step towards the death of the software. DAW users are moving away from Cubase as the quality of alternative PC DAWs has increased massively over the last decade. Reaper is now my recommended DAW for users who need stability and the ability to run large libraries of third party plug-ins without CPU problems. Ableton, StudioOne and Pro Tools are also solid.

My LA client and I connected for a remote support session. He showed me how he could load a project that he had created on Cubase 12 on his old PC, but it was completely maxing out the performance meter on his new PC using Cubase 13. He explained that this project was pushing the limits of his old PC, but his new one was about 10 times the CPU and RAM capacity, so should have been able to cope easily.

I checked over my client’s system, and I could see that everything else on his high-spec PC seemed fine. In Task Manager, Cubase 13 was showing as using 3% of available CPU and 10% of the available RAM. However, in Cubase’s performance meter, ASIO guard and Realtime CPU were both peaking.

Previous troubleshooting experience has taught me that recent versions of Cubase can experience problems with CPU when loading preference files from old versions. I went through tests by removing the preference files and reopening Cubase. No improvement, unfortunately.

I downloaded Cubase 12 to my client’s PC to see if that version would load correctly, but again there was no improvement.

My client had booked me for an hour and I had to end the session there as I had another booking. I gave my client some next steps to try himself and asked him to let me know the results.

Later that night, I received this message:

Hi Paul, I’ve tried Cubase 11 – 13 but the problems are the same on all of them. All the cores seemed to be having some movement in the CPU resource meter after changing the power setting to Ultimate Performance. But It’s still reading pretty high.

My client and I arranged to reconnect to try some more troubleshooting steps. The next thing to investigate will be the plug-ins.

    To be continued

  • Cubase Slow Loading & Freezing Solved: Waves V13 License Conflict with Cubase 13

Cubase Slow Loading & Freezing Solved: Waves V13 License Conflict with Cubase 13

This week I was booked to resolve issues for two separate clients using different DAWs but with similar problems. One client was using Cubase and the other Pro Tools. In both cases, the problem turned out to be Waves plug-ins.

    The Problem

When my client opened Cubase 13 the loading splash screen would freeze and take up to 10 minutes to resolve before loading the application.

Once Cubase had loaded, my client tried to open a project but found certain plug-ins were missing.

    The Solution

I went through various tests to identify the cause of the slow loading issue and found that when I removed some (but not all!) Waves plug-ins from my client’s VST plug-ins folder Cubase would load at its normal speed.

Cubase uses a format of plug-ins called VST. Most plug-in developers release their plug-ins in this format and Cubase is able to interact with them as it programmed to do so. When there is an issue with a plug-in (for example a missing licence or missing file errors) an VST plug-in is able to launch an error message in Cubase and allow the user to solve the problem. (Activate the licence, locate the missing files etc)

Waves plug-ins use a different system involving container files in VST format called Waveshells that host bundle files containing the plug-ins. This system usually works fine, but it seems recent changes by either Steinberg or Waves have caused a situation that where Waves licence errors are causing them to be blocked by Cubase.

I experimented with using different versions of the Waveshells and trying to repair the Waves licences using Wave’s troubleshooting guides and the repair options in the Waves Central software. In recent years, Waves have started using a complicated system of licences/update plans to force their customers to buy updates to keep their products compatible with the latest DAWs. Users start to notice problems when they try to load old plug-ins within new DAW software or new plug-ins within older DAW software.

In this particular instance, there seemed to be an issue specific to the Waves V13 licence’s compatibility with Cubase 13. Interestingly, V11 and V14 plug-ins were working fine on my client’s system.

The easiest solution to the problem was to pay Waves $22 per plug-in to update the licences. Another option would have been to see if we could have used an older version of Cubase to run the plug-ins without updates, or to try using a different version of the Waveshells. Since the V11 licences were working, we could have explored that option.

My client wanted to resolve the problem quickly, so I showed him how to purchase the updates and active them in Waves Central. Once we had updated the Waveshells to V15, the plug-ins were restored in Cubase 13.

Seventh Heaven VST Plug-in Crashing Cubase – Solved

Hi Paul. After installing the Seventh Heaven reverb plug-in from LiquidSonics my Cubase Elements 10 software no longer loads. It gets to a screen that says ‘Loading VST3 plug-ins’ and then freezes. I have to shut down my PC. Can you help? – Tony

I received the above message from a client and we arranged a remote support session for later that day. I called Tony via WhatsApp voice chat and we used AnyDesk so that I could see his screen and take control of his PC.

After spending a bit of time checking over Tony’s system, I found that the problem was with the licensing portion of the Seventh Heaven plug-in. As the VST3 plug-in is loaded within Cubase it should trigger the iLok License Manager app to open and allow the user to register the software with an activation code provided on purchase.

For some reason iLok was not opening as it should, so I manually downloaded an updated version of the iLok software and helped Tony set up his user account on iLok.com. We opened the iLok license manager on his PC and signed in with his iLok account. We then used the activation code to register a license for Seventh Heaven on his PC.

After everything was sorted with the license we reopened Cubase and Tony was pleased to see that Cubase now loaded without issue. We tested Seventh Heaven was working by loading it as an insert plug-in in one of Tony’s songs.

We spent the remainder of the hour’s booking having a look over Tony’s filing system for his Cubase projects and I made some recommendations on how he could move his projects to free up disk space whilst avoiding missing audio file errors. At the end of the session Tony was kind enough to leave me this nice review:

“Very efficient and professional service! Cubase problems were dealt with patiently and Paul took time to explain what was going on. I would recommend his services to anyone.”

    Incompatible demo plugins

His VST Plugins folders had a few incompatible 32-Bit plugins which Cubase was struggling to add to its Plugin Manager Blocklist. Using a process of finding likely culprits, trial and error I went through his plugins folders, found the ones which were causing the problem and took them out. Once the plugins were removed and the preferences reset Cubase Artist 9 launched without a problem.

The particular plugins that were causing the problems were demo ones my client didn’t want to use in the future so we removed them from the system. My client was happy to have Cubase working again and wrote me a nice review after the session. Thanks Ben!

    Cubase Crashing on Load

Spoke to a client in the West of England who was having a problem with Cubase crashing as it was loading.

I started the process of troubleshooting by restarting Cubase and watching the info displayed on its opening splash screen. I noticed that the crash was occurring as Cubase was checking its index of VST plugins.

Since Cubase wouldn’t open, I used Windows explorer to find the VST plugins folder and temporarily moved its contents to a different location. I then wiped Cubase’s preferences to force it to reindex the plugins upon loading.

    This time, Cubase loaded correctly.

I went back to the VST plugins folder and went through the process of individually moving the plugins back into Cubase and testing whether it still opened. I had a pretty good idea of which plugins would be the likely cause.

This process didn’t take a full hour, so I used the rest of the time to update my client’s version of Cubase and check compatibility with their other plugins.
