Hi Paul. After installing the Seventh Heaven reverb plug-in from LiquidSonics my Cubase Elements 10 software no longer loads. It gets to a screen that says ‘Loading VST3 plug-ins’ and then freezes. I have to shut down my PC. Can you help? – Tony
I received the above message from a client and we arranged a remote support session for later that day. I called Tony via WhatsApp voice chat and we used AnyDesk so that I could see his screen and take control of his PC.
After spending a bit of time checking over Tony’s system, I found that the problem was with the licensing portion of the Seventh Heaven plug-in. As the VST3 plug-in is loaded within Cubase it should trigger the iLok License Manager app to open and allow the user to register the software with an activation code provided on purchase.
For some reason iLok was not opening as it should, so I manually downloaded an updated version of the iLok software and helped Tony set up his user account on iLok.com. We opened the iLok license manager on his PC and signed in with his iLok account. We then used the activation code to register a license for Seventh Heaven on his PC.
After everything was sorted with the license we reopened Cubase and Tony was pleased to see that Cubase now loaded without issue. We tested Seventh Heaven was working by loading it as an insert plug-in in one of Tony’s songs.
We spent the remainder of the hour’s booking having a look over Tony’s filing system for his Cubase projects and I made some recommendations on how he could move his projects to free up disk space whilst avoiding missing audio file errors. At the end of the session Tony was kind enough to leave me this nice review:

Hello Paul. I would be pleased to hire you if you know how to solve this issue: “Audio Unit plug-in reported a problem which might cause the system to become unstable. Please quit and restart Logic Pro”. I am on Mac Sonoma 14.3 – M1 chip using Logic 10.8.1.
I received the above message from Tim and we arranged a time to connect for a remote support session later that same day. At the start of the session, I called Tim via WhatsApp voice chat and we set up a remote connection between our computers using AnyDesk.
I asked Tim to load up Logic on his Mac and show me the problem occurring. Tim explained that the error message didn’t appear all the time, but only sometimes when he opened certain Kontakt sample libraries.
Tim loaded up Logic Pro and tried to load one of his Kontakt sample libraries. Logic threw up the same error message and needed to be restarted. I opened Native Access to check details of the Kontakt installation.
Looking through Native Access I could see that the library files were installed on an external hard disk that wasn’t currently shown as connected to the Mac. I asked Tim about this and he double-checked the USB-C connection to the external disk.
Once the USB cable had been reconnected, the disk now appeared on the desktop. We re-opened Logic Pro and checked the plug-in again. This time Kontakt opened the library without any issues. Problem solved!
I spent the remainder of the hour with Tim checking over his system and making sure everything else was installed and running smoothly. Tim and I had a chat about his music and I gave him some tips on some of the latest features of Logic Pro.
Tim was very happy that he now understood why his Kontakt library problem occurred and how to avoid it in the future. Although the solution turned out to be simple, he was grateful to have a professional look at his system and solve it for him. After the session, he took the time to write me this nice review:

Hi Paul. I have 3 song files that are on my old Atari ST sequencer. Can you help me transfer them into Cubase?

I received the above message from Alan and we arranged a time to connect for a remote support session. We used WhatsApp video, so Alan could show me the front panel of the Atari and I used AnyDesk to connect to Alan’s Mac and take control of Cubase.
Alan explained his setup to me and I downloaded the manual for the Atari. Although the Atari is now nearly 40 years old, it can still be easily connected to modern equipment using MIDI cables. Considering how many types of cables and connection standards are now all-but obsolete (Firewire, DAT, SCSI, etc) the fact that MIDI hasn’t changed in 40 years is a testament to the genius of its simplicity.
Initially I tried to make everything work with the least amount of cable changes possible, so I tried to set the Atari to slave to Cubase via MIDI clock, but the MIDI-IN clock options of the Atari were greyed out. Rather than work out why, I tried a different approach.
Via WhatsApp video, I talked Alan through how to connect the MIDI-OUT of the Atari to the MIDI-IN of his Focusrite Scarlett audio interface via 5-pin DIN cable.
We did some tests to establish the MIDI connection was working and then made a recording of Alan’s first song into Cubase. Without a working MIDI clock to sync the devices, we had to press record in Cubase and then play on the Atari. Once the MIDI was recorded, I manually shifted the first note of the MIDI region to the start of the song. I was initially worried that there might be drift on the MIDI clock, but when I zoomed in and checked the MIDI, I was pleased to find the clock was stable and I could see no drift.
I used Cubase’s MIDI Dissolve feature to split the MIDI region across 16 channels tracks and checked that everything played back correctly. I showed Alan how he could assign VST instruments in Cubase to play back the regions. We could also re-route this MIDI back into Alan’s Roland Sound Canvas to re-record his tracks with the original 1980s sounds.
We used Cubase for this task as this was Alan’s DAW of choice, but we could use the same method for Ableton, Logic, Pro Tools etc.
At the end of the hour’s remote support booking, Alan was delighted he now had a method to transfer his old songs into Cubase.

Hi Paul. Hope we can connect soon for a lesson. I want to be able to control the levels of the instruments in my Cubase project and have them change throughout the song. What’s the best way for me to do this? – Sarah
I received the above message from Sarah and we set up a time to connect for a one-hour remote lesson later that week.
Sarah is a composer who uses VST orchestral instruments to create her compositions in Cubase. She already knew how to balance the levels of the instruments in her projects using the MixConsole, but she wanted to be able to vary the levels of instruments throughout the piece.
Sarah’s request was straightforward, but (as with almost everything in Cubase) there was more than one way we could achieve what she wanted:
We could vary the velocities of individual MIDI notes
We could draw automation data using the Pencil or Line tools
We could record automation changes by moving the cursor
We could record movement of the pots/sliders on her controller keyboard as MIDI regions
We could record movement of the pots/sliders as Quick Control automation data
We had a chat about the resources available in Sarah’s setup and decided that since she had an M-Audio Axiom 49 controller keyboard with physical sliders, it would make sense to use this.
We assigned Cubase’s Quick Controls to the default MIDI CC values being sent by the Axiom’s sliders.
I then showed Sarah how to open the Quick Controls section of the Track Inspector and showed her how we could now adjust the volume of tracks using the sliders.
Everything was working correctly, so I showed Sarah how we could arm a track for Automation recording using each track’s W button. (We discussed the importance of turning the W off once she had recorded a section of automation in order to not overwrite previously recorded automation.)
Now that automation recording was working, Sarah made a recording to test out the new setup. Everything worked perfectly!
After a couple more tests Sarah was confident that she could go on to use this method while composing on her own.
Sarah was very pleased that in a single one-hour lesson she had her question answered with an easy solution that did exactly what she wanted.
I told Sarah she was very welcome and would be happy to connect again to answer any other Cubase or music technology questions in the future.

To fix the projects, I had to individually open each project and manually re-set the location of the project’s Audio folder. Then I used the Export as Backup feature of Cubase 5 to create new versions of the projects, which I saved into a new archived folder.
Once I had created tidy versions of all the projects, I cleaned up all the old versions by moving them to my clients’ backup drive. I didn’t want to delete the audio files yet, just in case I’d missed anything in the clean-up process.
The whole process took two hours and at the end my client was very happy that he could now access all his old Cubase songs without error messages.

Yesterday, I connected for a remote support session with a music producer who needed some help setting up and testing his equipment before an upcoming recording session.
We looked at his SSL12 audio interface and 360 software.
I guided my client through the correct software settings and how to connect his Focusrite Octopre to his SSL12 to allow more than 4 inputs to be recorded.
I helped my client set up a template in Logic Pro and together we tested that everything was working as it should.

In a recent remote technical support session, I helped a client work out why they were having a problem with the routing chain for their studio outboard equipment.
This is the signal path they wanted to achieve:
Pro Tools plays back an audio track
The track’s audio is routed to Symphony I/O Outputs 7+8
Symphony Outputs 7+8 are connected by jack cables to the SSL Bus+ Inputs
SSL Bus+ Outputs connected by jack cables to Symphony I/O Inputs 7+8
Pro Tools records onto a new audio track
My client talked me through the chain and I had a look at their software settings using AnyDesk. I found the problem within the Apogee Control app.
By default, Outputs 1-8 are all set to monitor signal from Playback 1-2.
Changing the Digital Ref value to match the Playback channels received from Pro Tools solved the problem. The signal path now flowed exactly as my client wanted it.

One of my long-term technical support clients, John, had bought the app Loopy Pro to use with his current setup. He booked me for an on-site visit to help set up Loopy Pro on his iPad and integrate it into the rest of his recording setup.
This is John at the end of our session testing out his new setup.
It took a bit of thinking to work out the optimal configuration for John’s gear. The chain ended up being:
John plays guitar or sings
Guitar signal processed by Roland GR55
GR55 and mic connected to Komplete Audio 6 Interface
Komplete Audio 6 Interface connected to iPad via USB OTG adaptor
iPad runs the Loopy Pro app which records and loops John’s playing and singing
Output of Loopy sent to USB mixer via Komplete Audio 6 Interface
Mac connected to USB mixer
Ableton running on Mac
Ableton captures John’s recording session

This is welcome news to some of my Audio Support clients who have recently purchased Macs running Sonoma 14.4.1 and want to use pro-audio plug-ins in Garageband and Logic Pro.
Sonoma 14.4.1 contained bugs which caused Kontakt 7 and Spitfire Audio plug-ins to crash.
This is despite problems with Audio Units in Sonoma being recognised by Apple and apparently resolved in the release notes for 14.4.1:
There have been reports of compatibility issues with PACE products in macOS 14.4, including the iLok License Manager, connected to Apple silicon Macs running macOS 14.4. The problem specifically impacts plugins from various manufacturers that are safeguarded by PACE/iLok, including those made by Universal Audio, when used with host DAWs such as Logic Pro. Apple’s release notes for macOS 14.4.1 say the update provides a fix for cases in which “copy protected Audio Unit plug-ins designed for professional music apps may not open or pass validation.”
However, problems with plug-ins definitely remained in 14.4.1. I can personally confirm seeing crashes with Spitfire Audio and Kontakt, but there may be others.
I’m not personally running Sonoma on my studio Mac, but I have alerted some of my clients who may be affected. I will update this page with news once we know if the 14.5 release resolves these issues.

Hi Paul, I’ve been having issues with my Cubase. My software license is refusing to read itself all of a sudden. Can you help me please? – Robbie
I received the above message from guitarist / producer, Robbie and we exchanged a few emails to confirm the problems and a time to connect.
This is a breakdown of our remote support session and how I sorted the problem:
E-Licenser Control Centre failed to run maintenance tasks.
Restarted PC
Downloaded latest Elicenser Control Centre
Installed as Administrator
E-licenser ran maintenance tasks
USB E-licenser still not showing in ECC
Client pulled USB stick in and out of USB socket
USB Licenser now showing
Opened Cubase
Cubase not opening
Ran Cubase as Administrator
Cubase now opening
Checked client could open project files.
Checked client happy and everything now working.
