Spoke to a client in the West of England who was having a problem with Cubase crashing as it was loading.
I started the process of troubleshooting by restarting Cubase and watching the info displayed on its opening splash screen. I noticed that the crash was occurring as Cubase was checking its index of VST plugins.
Since Cubase wouldn’t open, I used Windows explorer to find the VST plugins folder and temporarily moved its contents to a different location. I then wiped Cubase’s preferences to force it to reindex the plugins upon loading.
This time, Cubase loaded correctly.
I went back to the VST plugins folder and went through the process of individually moving the plugins back into Cubase and testing whether it still opened. I had a pretty good idea of which plugins would be the likely cause.
This process didn’t take a full hour, so I used the rest of the time to update my client’s version of Cubase and check compatibility with their other plugins.
